It’s good to be real and authentic, right? Let’s talk about why I Stopped Waiting for Things to be Perfect. The real raw reasons! And I’d love to know what you have stopped waiting for?! It’s all life behind the scenes at Cotter Crunch today! And please excuse the imperfect grammar. 🙂
I recently read an article by Medium called ..
Make Life Easier on Yourself by Accepting “Good Enough.” Don’t Pursue Perfection, Pursue Progress.
Which led me to research all the quotes and sayings about perfectionism and perfect timing. Here’s what I found.
Good enough is the new perfect. – Becky Beaupre Gillespie
To be perfect implies a condition where your action or performance attains a level of excellence that cannot be exceeded.
Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.- Voltaire. In other words, instead of pushing yourself to an impossible “perfect,” and therefore getting nowhere, accept “good.”
If you keep waiting for the right time, it may never happen.
Creativity flourishes when you don’t seek perfection.
Now, hang with me here because I do have a point other than to just share quotes. Like really! A point to share with you REAL LIFE (Behind the SCENES) in relation to timing, perfect timing, perfectionism.
You ready? K. Here goes!
3 Things I Stopped Waiting for….. to be Perfect
I stopped waiting for that PERFECT MOMENT to feel adequate.
Or what some might view as feeling like you’ve “arrived.” The truth is, we will never arrive. We will never feel … ENOUGH. But I think that’s what keeps us evolving. Thank you to my latest surge of the imposter syndrome for making realize this! You know, when you don’t feel like you deserve anything, let alone the feeling of accomplishment.
For me, I kept feeling like I wasn’t an adequate wife, entrepreneur, daughter, sister, nutritionist, photographer, you name it! I wasn’t “enough” in my eyes. Man, that waiting to feel better about myself SUCKED. It also caused me to become quite stagnant and stuck. So you know what I did? I did the exact opposite of what I was feeling and doing. I did something that would make me HAVE TO ACT more confident. I took a business risk, I started just putting myself out there. Hence more of the “in the kitchen” videos like one. I signed up for entrepreneur and photography workshops/course, etc.. I just did something.
Because doing ANYTHING is better than doing nothing.
Doing ANYTHING is better than doing nothing. Let me rephrase that. Doing ANYTHING is better than waiting for things to be perfect. Why? Because it moves you FORWARD, flaws and all!
“One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn’t do.” — Henry Ford
Which leads me to number 2.
I stopped waiting for the perfect time to MAKE A CHANGE or TRY SOMETHING NEW (career wise and personally).
Ya’ll, this has been a huge year for us in change and trying things new! And it’s only April. ACK! I guess you could say that the feeling of inadequacy really got to me. CHANGE had to happen!
First of all, we signed up to co-host another FOODIE BOOTCAMP and EVERYTHING FOOD CONFERENCE this year. You must come!!! YOU ALL ARE INVITED! It’s at the end of this month. OMG! But don’t worry, there will be more… stay tuned by signing up for email list HERE. 🙂 Oh and this is the perfect batch your content workshop to FEEL MORE THAN ENOUGH. Just sayin…
Second of all, Brooke and I co-edited a magazine. Yep, A REAL MAGAZINE. A SUPER DUPER AWESOME AMAZING POPULAR MAGAZINE.
If you haven’t yet discovered where women cook, where women create, where women work, & where women create work, you need to go pick up a dozen or so copies of each and catch up on your inspirational reading. ?
This incredible opportunity was given to us by Jo Packham, the founder of a series of magazines dedicated to women telling their OWN stories. Women like YOU and ME.
What’s even more AMAZING about this woman and this magazine is the support she GENEROUSLY gives to other women entrepreneurs. You can dive more into details in this Instagram post!
But for now, here’s a sneak peek of the inside. And it’s FILLED TO THE BRIM OF RECIPES!
You know what else I did for change? I decided I needed to stop waiting for the perfect time to rent a studio space. I mean, it’s been a dream of mine (goal of mine) for over 6 years. Yet I didn’t feel like I deserved it. But I looked for a space to rent anyway. I had saved enough money to do this, so why not!!?! And you know what? I found a space. I rented it. And now I am going to renovate the whole place. Um, ya!! I have absolutely no clue when or how I am going to this, but I am.
For a full tour of the space, just check out latest Thursday Things on IG or sneak peek video HERE!
I can’t wait to share this journey with you. Please stay tuned because I’m going to need help with this whole process and I’d love your input. My hope is that I can share this space with others who want to teach their passion. I have so many ideas and I’m so excited for it but at the same time I’m so nervous. That being said, I’m embracing the messy imperfect process.
Number 3…
I stopped waiting to have the PERFECT MARRIAGE and making plans for the PERFECT FUTURE.
We have no clue what we’re doing with life. Does anybody? My husband just went through another job transition. We’re still ACTIVELY waiting to find a house in Utah, which honestly has been a bit overwhelming. And we have to be moved out of our condo in a month or two, so pressure is on. I guess you could say we have plans but no plans. We have a marriage that’s far from perfect and always being worked on. Progress over perfection. We have no idea what we really want for our future. We’re human. But I would like to stop right here and thank God that what we do have is the NOW.
We have jobs. We have this city. We have this dog. We have this moment. Whether we have kids or not doesn’t matter (another story for another day). We can stop waiting for all the things to align to plan the perfect life.
So how do I want to show up for my marriage now? Imperfectly perfect. Humbled. Grateful. Forgiving. Loving. Understanding.
Your turn!
Tell me one thing you let go of in order to be “perfect” or to have “perfect.” What are you NOT WAITING for? Share it all!!!
Thank you for listening friends.
Cheers!
p.s Are you interested in another behind the scenes Ask me Anything series? If so, leave me a question below. Mwah!
Good for you! Life is all about learning and growing and challenging ourselves and not waiting! You are so good enough, just the way you are. And being a perfectionist (or being married to one) can be difficult. It is good to recognize your efforts, and your results and to cut yourself some slack. But like you said most of all, not to let it hold you back from action. My daughter is a bit of a perfectionist and I she sometimes just won’t play if she doesn’t think she can win. I try to tell her part of the fun is in the playing, the learning, the growing!
Yes, that’s so true! Thanks!
This was the message I needed to hear today. I found out only yesterday I fail a licensure exam after just migrating to the UK two months now and I’ve just been sitting here feeling so inadequate. There are so many changes I need to make in my life as it relates to health and career but I feel so crippled by fear! It’s nice knowing others out there can identify to these feelings. One thing life has been teaching me is that we can’t approach life solely on feelings. Today I choose to trust God’s plans for my life knowing they are good and work in spite of how I feel to make my life and lives of others more fulfilling. Thank you for sharing and your encouragement! God bless you
I’m sorry to hear that, that is definitely a hard struggle. And it can be so difficult to put your trust in God, but it has made all the difference in my life. I’m glad your choosing to trust Him. I hope everything works out-keep on keeping on!❤️
I love this so much for what it reminds me to do to – stop waiting and perfectionism is overrated – and the personal reflection you share as I feel the same way in the waiting game of life. What is there to wait for?! The here and now is what matters so we had better live it to it’s fullest because it is now or never ?
I think we could talk about this forever. And I’m so glad to know your heart. Cheers to the now!! ❤️?
Thank you so much for sharing this and for the continued inspiration. I finally have let go of the debilitating “what if” mentality. I can’t waste time stressing about things I can’t control. Life is blessed and meant to be LIVED! Xo
I love this Liz! What a true accomplishment to let go of “what if” mentality.
This post was… inspiring! Yes, more!! I love feeling that I know one of my favorite bloggers a little bit better, and… CONGRATS! on your journey, space, magazine, marriage, LIFE!!
I think you’re great already!
Thank you Jilly. That means a lot! <3 Truly.
Thankfully, I gave up the perfectionist syndrome years ago, although I could always use a little more forward growth…as soon as I get another nap in. 😉
I adore these posts. Keep being you and congratulations on the space. It looks incredible…so much potential.
That’s why I look up to you so much! YOu are my woman mentor! Haha Love you!
LOVED this <3 <3 Cheers to YOU!
I love you more!
I loved this post today!! I’ve always been the type of person to say to myself, “Well, I’ll be happy once we get to the new house”, or “I’ll feel better once I have 50k followers”. But in doing so I’ve been ignoring all the good things happening NOW that I have to be grateful for! This is a still a learning journey for me, but it’s been nice taking time to be grateful for my existing life 🙂
Oh girl! I feel ya! It’s quite hard to disconnect from that feeling. But you are utterly amazing. Just know that!
