Lucky New Year
Sticking with New Years traditions, I thought it would be fun (and yummy) to share a LUCKY recipe. Black-Eyed Peas are said to bring you luck in the new year. Hence this Chipotle Black-Eyed Peas Hummus.
Black-Eyed Peas – A true southern food ya’ll! Black-eyed peas are high in fiber, iron, and have a good source in zinc. ALL Lovely when supporting our gut healthy and immunity! Now, about the luck. Black-eyed peas are said symbolize “good things to come: the promise of germination when planted!”
Nutrition Note: Black-eyed peas (and legumes in general) are a form of resistant starch once cooked and cooled. Resistant starch (in my humble opinion) is the new super food, along with pre-biotics. What happens is that the non-digestible fibers in these foods actually ferment in your digestive track. But that’s good. That fermentation feeds on the good bacteria to make them stronger and you healthier. Adding in a little each week to see how this helps with both our digestion, adrenals, and immunity.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Below is an overview of the ingredients and instructions for black-eyed pea hummus. Please be sure to scroll down to the recipe card below for the complete details and instructions!
- Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
- Onion
- Garlic
- Cooked and cooled Black-Eyed Peas
- Tahini
- Olive Oil
- Spices
Note: Lentils and black-eyed peas are a safe segue into beans if you are sensitive to legumes. To make them more digestible, soaking those peas or legumes before cooking might be beneficial for you. If you are okay with legumes, then feel free to use the organic canned black-eyed peas for this hummus recipe!

Hi Lindsay. I’m not a vegan or vegetarian. However, I experiment with recipes from both, out of both curiosity as well as needing recipes I can make for friends & family. I was looking up instructions for cooking dried black-eyed peas, saw this recipe, and gave it a try.
I’ve been trying to cut back on my meat intake for a while, which led me to foods containing beans or peas. I’ve tried a dozen hummus recipes, and know of a few bean dips I haven’t been impressed with – but THIS recipe turned out better than all of them. Spicy, savory, smooth and hearty – I immediately passed it on to a vegan friend, who says she’s making it tonight.
Seriously, I don’t come across online recipes I like this much too often. Well done!
Oh i love that! Thanks for your kind words Jon. I love the chipotle in here too. Let me know how your vegan friend likes it!
wow, the food looks delicious and attractive, thank you for sharing
Hello,
Wow nice recipe(:
I made this tonight, and it was absolutely delicious! I couldn’t find the tahini, so I subbed with almond butter. This is by far the best hummus I’ve ever had. Thanks for the recipe!
I’m so glad! I’ll have to try it with almond butter next. ?
OH YES. Every year needs to end with a bang. This hummus is something I’d bury my face in! LOL!
Wow nice recipe Lindsay Cotter 🙂 i will try to make 🙂 Will make less spicy. Lets see how its taste.
I have a bunch of black eyed peas I didn’t know what to do with – but now I do! YUM! What a fun way to use them!
I had never tried black eyed peas.. I think I should give a try of this.
Once again a great recipe Lindsay 🙂
I’ve never heard the term, ‘resistant starch.’ I always learn something new when you share your recipes Lindsay! And this looks so creamy, delicious. One of my goals, hopefully, is to make more of your recipes this year.
Yes, it’s kinds like a fiber. But instead of digesting it, it turns into a fermentation which feeds good bacteria in our gut. It may take a while to get your stomach accustomed but it’s very good for you!
We have been insanely untraditional… tonight we just realized we hadn’t had black eyed peas, collards, ham… whatever. At least we remembered the champagne!
This did remind me I had a back-eyed pea hummus. Maybe I’ll make a batch when we get home. Just in case. 😉
all we need are lentils and fish and we luckiest PEOPLE ON PLANET! right?
I need this hummus in my life, and I needed it yesterday. Especially since it’s chipotle!! 🙂 Cheers to 2017, Lindsay!
o thought of you! This hummus is right up your alley!
I think I had pizza for New Year’s, and I’m just going to pretend it’s lucky because I’ve honestly never tried black eyed peas before. I could definitely go for a bit of this hummus, though! If not for the luck, then just because I could use a little spice to counter all the sweet I’ve been eating 😆
Haha, i will make this without spice or dim it down a bit for you. I know you don’t like spicy food. Hummus, YES! ALways. Happy New Year friend. Catch me up on you soon!
Between the child not sleeping and the holidays, December was a rough month for me so I missed a few posts. Fill me in. Anything big happening (other than the move!!!!)? That being said, Ave is now back to sleeping through the night (hooray) and I’m thrilled to be back here just in time for a black eyed pea post. I love those suckers; the band and the legumes. I’m glad to see you’re kicking off the new year in high style.
Happy New Year Baby. Blows kiss.
Maybe the child needs a hot toddy like i do. Haha. Kinda, sorta kidding. Miss you. NOthing going on here but moving and sick as a dog. Poo! Miss you.
at our family dinner last night, my mom was just talking about some article she read about people who eat spicy foods live longer!
Oh good! Then I will be living forever! LOL!
This looks amazing–I have a ton of veggies sitting in my fridge that would go perfectly with this hummus. Also, I’ve never had black eyed peas…..that needs to change asap!
what? You haven’t tried them? Girl, that must change! haha
Ooo so so good! It looks delicious! Perfect spice and I just love my black eyed peas <3
Yes! and you’re the queen of hummus, so let me know what you think of this! mm k?
I’ve never had a black eyed pea. Maybe that’s why I’ve always had such bad luck inn my life?
awww i think you are lucky cause you are YOU! <3
We had fish tacos last night. I’m going to pretend that they are going to bring us luck (even though they weren’t that good. I don’t know why… something was just off).
yes, let’s pretend. Maybe make hummus to combat “off” taste? LOL
