Lucky New Year

Sticking with New Years traditions, I thought it would be fun (and yummy) to share a lucky recipe. Black-Eyed Peas are said to bring you luck in the new year.

A true southern food y’all! Black-eyed peas are high in fiber, iron, and have a good source in zinc. All lovely when supporting our gut healthy and immunity! Now, about the luck. Black-eyed peas are said to symbolize “good things to come: the promise of germination when planted!”

Nutrition Note: Black-eyed peas (and legumes in general) are a form of resistant starch once cooked and cooled. Resistant starch (in my humble opinion) is the new super food, along with pre-biotics. What happens is that the non-digestible fibers in these foods actually ferment in your digestive track. But that’s good. That fermentation feeds on the good bacteria to make them stronger and you healthier. Adding in a little each week to see how this helps with both our digestion, adrenals, and immunity.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Below is an overview of the ingredients and instructions for black-eyed pea hummus. Please be sure to scroll down to the recipe card below for the complete details and instructions!

Vegan Chipotle Black Eyed Peas Hummus to start off the New Year. A fun Spicy twist on classic hummus with black-eyed-peas in place of garbanzo beans! This healthy hummus packs in some spice and flavor with the addition of chipotle peppers, onion, and garlic. Smokey, creamy, and gluten free! Perfect option for a quick snack or appetizer.
  • Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Cooked and cooled Black-Eyed Peas
  • Tahini
  • Olive Oil
  • Spices

Note: Lentils and black-eyed peas are a safe segue into beans if you are sensitive to legumes. To make them more digestible, soaking those peas or legumes before cooking might be beneficial for you. If you are okay with legumes, then feel free to use the organic canned black-eyed peas for this hummus recipe!

How to Make Black-Eyed Pea Hummus

  1. First make sure your peas are rinsed and cooled. Peel and chop your veggies.
  2. Place your peas, onion, garlic, tahini, olive oil, and peppers in food processor or blender and blend until combined
  3. Add in your spices, salt, pepper, lemon juice, and vinegar. Blend again until creamy.
  1. Taste to see if hummus is seasoned to your liking. If not, add more spices/salt/pepper.
  2. Remove from food processor and place in serving bowl or container.
  3. Garnish with extra onion and red pepper flakes.
  4. If not serving right away, keep in sealed container in fridge for up to 7 days.

Description

Lucky Chipotle Black-Eyed Peas Hummus! A fun Spicy twist on classic hummus with black-eyed peas in place of garbanzo beans! Perfect option for a quick snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 ⅔ cup cooked black-eyed peas (or 15 ounce canned, organic, rinsed/drained)
  • 1 green onion chipped
  • 3 garlic cloves, peeled (about 1 tsp minced)
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp chipotle peppers. See note for more options. (I used the canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce for extra heat)
  • 1 tbsp lemon or lime juice
  • sea salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ tbsp red wine vinegar
  • Extra onion or red pepper flakes to garnish.

Instructions

  1. First make sure your peas are rinsed and cooled. Peel and chop your veggies.
  2. Place your peas, onion, garlic, tahini, olive oil, and peppers in food processor or blender.
  3. Blend until combined.
  4. Add in your spices, salt, pepper, lemon juice, and vinegar. Blend again until creamy.
  5. Taste to see if hummus is seasoned to your liking. If not, add more spices/salt/pepper.
  6. Remove from food processor and place in serving bowl or container.
  7. Garnish with extra onion and red pepper flakes.
  8. If not serving right away, keep in sealed container in fridge for up to 7 days.
  9. Makes around 2 cups.

Notes

If it’s too spicy try If too spicy, adding more tahini. It will be thinner in texture though. If you want to use real chipotle peppers, I recommend adding one pepper at time when blending, just so you can adjust spice accordingly.

Hi Lindsay. I’m not a vegan or vegetarian. However, I experiment with recipes from both, out of both curiosity as well as needing recipes I can make for friends & family. I was looking up instructions for cooking dried black-eyed peas, saw this recipe, and gave it a try.

I’ve been trying to cut back on my meat intake for a while, which led me to foods containing beans or peas. I’ve tried a dozen hummus recipes, and know of a few bean dips I haven’t been impressed with – but THIS recipe turned out better than all of them. Spicy, savory, smooth and hearty – I immediately passed it on to a vegan friend, who says she’s making it tonight.

Seriously, I don’t come across online recipes I like this much too often. Well done!

I made this tonight, and it was absolutely delicious! I couldn’t find the tahini, so I subbed with almond butter. This is by far the best hummus I’ve ever had. Thanks for the recipe!

I’ve never heard the term, ‘resistant starch.’ I always learn something new when you share your recipes Lindsay! And this looks so creamy, delicious. One of my goals, hopefully, is to make more of your recipes this year.

Yes, it’s kinds like a fiber. But instead of digesting it, it turns into a fermentation which feeds good bacteria in our gut. It may take a while to get your stomach accustomed but it’s very good for you!

We have been insanely untraditional… tonight we just realized we hadn’t had black eyed peas, collards, ham… whatever. At least we remembered the champagne!

This did remind me I had a back-eyed pea hummus. Maybe I’ll make a batch when we get home. Just in case. 😉

I think I had pizza for New Year’s, and I’m just going to pretend it’s lucky because I’ve honestly never tried black eyed peas before. I could definitely go for a bit of this hummus, though! If not for the luck, then just because I could use a little spice to counter all the sweet I’ve been eating 😆

Between the child not sleeping and the holidays, December was a rough month for me so I missed a few posts. Fill me in. Anything big happening (other than the move!!!!)? That being said, Ave is now back to sleeping through the night (hooray) and I’m thrilled to be back here just in time for a black eyed pea post. I love those suckers; the band and the legumes. I’m glad to see you’re kicking off the new year in high style.

Happy New Year Baby. Blows kiss.
