First of all, I have to say DANG! Thank you for such awesome words of encouragement from my last post! I honestly wrote that post because it was on my heart and I needed to express that some how. It’s such a good feeling knowing that so many others feel the same way. Can I get an AMEN?! haha.
Moving on now here. Let’s talk tummies. Or the non cutesy term…. ..stomach issues. You all know I’ve had my fair share. You can read about it here. And I know many others have had the same. Whether it be from food allergies, stress, sports induced, etc. It ain’t pretty.
Now since I usually teach/train/run in the morning, I’ve learned a “routine” that works for me. Get up early, coffee, light breakfast, go! You get my point here. But the past couple weeks, my schedule has had to change. I’ve had to meet client to run in the afternoon or even delay my personal training till late afternoon. While many people find this easy, its not so much for me. My stomach is not too fond of it. Which leads to side cramps and acid indigestion mid run. UGH!!
A few weeks ago, the kind people at ReNew Life sent me a sample of their Ultimate Chia Life. Of course its just full of good stuff!

Chia Fresca anyone?
Ingredients:
- about 10 oz of water
- 1 tablespoon dry chia seeds
- a few teaspoons lemon or lime juice
- honey or agave nectar, to taste (optional)
Stir the chia seeds into the water; let them sit for about five minutes. Stir again, and let sit for as long as you like. The more it sits, the more gel-like the seeds and water become. Add citrus juice and sweetener to taste.
NoMeat Athlete swears buy it! Just see here for his review. And I have to admit, it was very refreshing. Definitely a drink that will help me get through my afternoon workouts/runs!
Well, that’s it for my Tummy Talk Tuesday. But before we go, please tell me, do you have a natural remedies you swear by? I need more in my life! haha.

Slippery Elm. It is the best natural remedy for indigestion/heart burn. My mother has a rare disease (Weigners) that requires her to take a medicine (I forget the name) that results in indigestion that is so bad that they prescribe medication to control the indigestion. She refused it (she only takes medication that is absolutely necessary) and said she'd control it with Slippery Elm. The doctor laughed her out of the consultation rooms. It worked. The doctor was amazed – and apparently now suggests it to other patients. Warning – it is disgusting both in terms of taste and texture, but if you swallow it quickly it's doable. You can get it from any health food shop.
oh definitely! I had some with coconut water blended with pineapple the other day. So refreshing! Lindsay ________________________________
I bet that chia drink would be awesome made with coconut water! 🙂
oh yes, of course. maybe try them out in your cereal first. Gluten free cereal that is, haha. Lindsay ________________________________
I missed this post…I too function best working out in the AM! Do you feel the chia seeds work well just for indigestion in general?! I'm still working on the GF diet…I know 😉
Oh Hillary, thank you! You are too kind! I love that we share the same passions and can read up on each other, not to mention support each other now.Cheers! Lindsay CotterNutrition Manager & Fitness [email protected] www.cottercrunch.com ________________________________
Just stumbled across your blog — you're stunning!
I bet they are even more refreshing in OJ……freshly squeezed.. What a great mom you are! Lindsay CotterNutrition Manager & Fitness [email protected] www.cottercrunch.com ________________________________
alex and I can have a chia fresca cocktail together anytime!:) Lindsay Cot________________________________
yes, lets just say its our version of cookies and milk for our tummies. Cheers! Lindsay ________________________________
I want to start using 'give it a whirl' more… great phrase!
My stomach is a hot mess these days…I'm just a little off balanced I think. Nothing a batch of fuel cookies and a serving of chia can't fix, eh?
I didn't realize chia was good for indigestion… I totally need to pass that on to Alex… he suffers from acid reflux pretty bad!
LOVE chia seeds!!!! Use them in my kids orange juice…fresh of course!!!! LOL
yes, me too! I've tried so many things so I thought I'd give this a whirl. Let me know if it helps! Lindsay ________________________________
I know! I am so excited to have this drink more often during the summer. Perfect after those outdoor workouts refreshments! Lindsay ________________________________
me too. I ate rolaids like they were sweet tarts, haha! This has helped so much. Let me know if it helps! Lindsay ________________________________
totally agree. I serving is 1 tbsp. I actually just used 2 tsp before a run. If you are having it after, I think 1 tbsp is fine. Let me know if you try it audrey! Lindsay ________________________________
I had absolutely no idea that chia seeds helped with indigestion! I LOVE baking with chia seeds and adding them to my oats. I'll have to try this little drinky drink sometime! I used to pop Tums like they were frickin candy until I started becoming more aware of what I was putting into my body. Now, if I have an upset stomach, the first thing I reach for is ginger tea!
question….5grams of fiber per serving…how much is a serving?how far in advance do you drink your chia fresca?i ask because 1tbs seems like alot and for me i think the fiber would be an issue during my run. i always have to watch what i eat pre run or i really need to run..if ya know what i mean?!?! 😉
oh wow, so the chia helped with your tummy? i've always had issues with what (and how much) i eat before running, so i'll have to keep this in mind 🙂
I totally have never tried chia but have always wanted to
ive had chia before but only mixed into oats…I have never thougth to make them in water with lemon! delish!
thanks Samantha! Its good to find your blog as well. Let me know if you try out any chia recipes!! Cheers, Lindsay CotterNutrition Manager & Fitness [email protected] www.cottercrunch.com ________________________________
I notice my indigestion more when my diet is more acidic. Fortunately chia seeds are very alkaline! Let me know if you try it out! Cheers, Lindsay CotterNutrition Manager & Fitness [email protected] www.cottercrunch.com ________________________________
oh yes, love the Apple cider vinegar. I make my own kombucha and that helps too. All great natural remedies! thanks Steph! Lindsay ________________________________
i'm so interested in chia…thanks for the tips! great blog, excited to follow along 🙂
I have heard about the benefical attributes of chia. Even though I don't get as much acid reflux as I used to, I definitely need to try it.
Chia seeds are great for indigestion! Another thing that works is apple cider vinegar. It seems counterintuitive, but it really helps. Just make sure that you mix it with water or apple juice first…once I just tossed back a tablespoon of the pure vinegar, and I'm pretty sure that I stopped breathing for a few seconds.
girl you are too kind, you inspire me with all your words of wisdom and strength! Can't wait to meet you finally! Lindsay ________________________________
oh girl, I'm going to go buy more pineapple and coconut water now! awesome tips! thanks! Lindsay ________________________________
Lindsay, thanks again for posting about this product!! I had no idea it helped with stomach issues too!! I REALLY need to get some Chia seeds now 🙂
I feel you!!! Pineapple+coconut water=blend them and drink it in the morning or before lunch? It releases all the gas and tastes great too.I am definitely trying chia.Hope your schedule changes back to peaceful morning runs:)
drinking an amazing grass now! It really does help. I'll have to try aloe vera juice. Heard great things! Lindsay ________________________________
I honestly can't imagine to have tummy woes like that and still be as fit as you are! I swear, you are such an inspiration to me (non tummy woes girl) and I'm sure you inspire those WITH tummy woes even more! I love that you are so open about it and can share it here, along with your tips and trips. Chia seeds, who knew?? PS I'm glad Heather won, YAY! 😉
wow i am so glad that helped! you poor thing with the tummy stuff. what seems to settle my tummy is amazing grass or drinking aloe vera juice.
ya that face was more like, whats eating my esophagus and intestines, and oh boy my lunch does not taste good coming back up. haha! I had the same stomach explosion as you did. Crazy how we carry our stress there. Have you added those foods back in? I think the alkaline diet has really helped me as well. At least thats what I am telling myself….hehe.Lindsay ________________________________
amen to that! I think our bodies can definitely tell us what they need to work at its best. I feel such a release in the morning versus in the evening. Oh I wish i could come to your yoga classes, I bet they are amazing! thanks Jen. Lindsay ________________________________
Maybe it was just too much fiber at once. that happends to me. Try out the fresca and let me know whatcha think! p.s.look for your giveaway package to be there by friday….HOPEFULLY! YEA! Lindsay ________________________________
Amen! Also, sorry about the tummy troubles.. I get in my routines too and it can really upset the belly haha. Glad the chia seeds are working out for ya 😉 Enjoy the warm weather in TX for me!!!
haha, yes. I have totally done that. And I always FLOSS afterwards. Those suckers get stuck everywhere! Lindsay________________________________
Thanks for the great new chia drink idea! I was eating A LOT of chia pudding, but it was made with boxed almond milk & all the extra crap they add to it plus waaaay too much stevia that I was adding, & when I got my bloating issues, I thought that may have been the culprit. Whew! What a run on sentence! Anyway, I've wanted to add chia back more naturally, & your recipe fits the bill…gracias!
Aw! That "pain shot" of you is so genuinely "oh-what's-eating-my-esophagus?!" that I laughed, but only because I know that pain SO WELL! I took on too much when I was a student and my stomach exploded… after a battery of tests, we never knew why, but for a year I couldn't have brown fluids (coffee, tea, hot chocolate), alcohol, citrus, other acids, and if I got angry, ouch! Sympathy from a fellow sufferer! And how AWESOME… I had no idea that chia could be an antacid! And here I just loved chia for the crunch… very cool. 🙂
My body is on a serious morning workout schedule right now…especially with yoga. I find that I don't even enjoy practicing in the evenings as much anymore because I prefer not to have anything in my stomach when I practice. When I do have tough evening workouts I just make sure to be mindful of my lunch and snack choices. And I am totally addicted to chia seeds and I did not know that they help with acid indigestion – good to know!
very nice new header for your blog! And I love chia seeds too…you know whats a pain? when you try to dishwash something with leftover chia seeds…they're so hard to get off, lol!!
lauren, your blood sugar is pretty low in the morning so I would have something small to eat befoe a workout. Sometimes you can get nauseous if you workout on an empty stomach. I'd try to eat banana, a glass of juice, a granola bar, etc. Then get good protein, fat, carb balance meal afterwards. Hope this helps!also, to leave your website, just click on options when you leave a comment. You can leave your URL there. Cheers! I still need to try chia seeds! Thanks for the comment on my FB stat–I'm in crutches 🙁 But I'm praying it will heal fast!
We love chia seeds!!! Thanks for the great drink idea! And BTW I love the new blog look! 🙂
Sorry, somehow I don't know how to comment from my blog on here.
I always feel nauseous in the morning when I am working out. I try to get my workouts in a half hour after waking up, before eating breakfast because I heard that helps burn more fat. But my tummy does not like it one bit. Maybe you have some advice? Also, what else does Chia help with?
I know, thats gonna be in my head for ever now. chi chi chi chia!!! hehe. Lindsay ________________________________
oh yes, they are the best. Great addition to your healthy lifestyle! 🙂 Lindsay ________________________________
amen to that! Green juice saves us all! Well that at kombucha, hehe! Lindsay ________________________________
I learn so much by clicking on "Cotter Crunch"!! Always!! Ch-ch-ch-chia! If I can sneak these little guys into yummy cookies, it's a win-win! Have a fab day Lindsay!!!
Ohh myyy I love your new header and blog makeover – SO CUTE! And I have too recently been introduced to Chia Seeds… I can't believe I was missing out my entire life – they are the BEST!
Love the new blog look!!!Chia seeds are wonderful. Especially for thickening up smoothies. Mmmmm…. My home remedy for everything is hot lemon water OR a green juice. Green juice heals all. 🙂
Chia seeds with hemp powder, honey, banana, strawberries, spinach, and OJ have become my "I love me" breakfast! Happy Healthy Body and Systems a go!Natural Remedies: double the yogurt the week before feminine fun (extra calcium kicks the cramps out the door!); hydrogen peroxide in the ears for swimmer's ear and other infections; baking soda in the laundry for fabric softener; and I could go on… (next to no chemicals in me home…)Is it all physical activity that creates tummy torture in the afternoon or just specific types? Is there something you can substitute or could you tweak in a bit of phys. stuff in a different format at the preferred time? Just some questions to see what solutions might arise.Good Luck! 🙂
Love chia seeds I seriously add them to everything!
oh girl, I forgive ya! But you gotta try them……at some point or another. I think you'd like them in some warm comforting oats! hehe. Lindsay ________________________________
how can you not love that little seed, hehe! Lindsay ________________________________
Oh I heard GERD is just awful. I've had a few friends with gallbladders removed and they feel so much better. I used to get really sick from a digestive issue and lost a lot of weigh too. Probiotics are my godsend and yes BRAGGS! Love that stuff. Thanks for sharing this Caroline. Lindsay ________________________________
this was actually my first chia drink, well besides in smoothies. So refreshing! Natural rememdies just make me feel more nourished, ya know? Lindsay ________________________________
bahahah i love that first picture of you in discomfort. not because you're in discomfort but because your making a funny face. forgive me? i've never had chia seeds before. forgive me for that too?
go have a chia fresca now, or even just spoon some with water to follow. Maybe that will help before your run. I hate the bloated feeling too, not pretty to run with! But enjoy the warmth! Lindsay CotterNutrition Manager & Fitness [email protected] www.cottercrunch.com ________________________________
I feel ya girl, our tummies can be our running demons. Lets slap them in the face with chi chi chi chia! hehe! Lindsay ________________________________
oh post that recipe!! I want to use it!! Lindsay ________________________________
It actually helps both upper and lower. I get both acid indigestion and lower, not pretty! Let me know if you try this! Lindsay________________________________
now you can make chia jello shots before a run, haha! I actually like the fresca, tastes good! Lindsay ________________________________
me too! I could use a few more remedies!;) Lindsay ________________________________
I know, I used to have to skip working out in the afternoon if I didn't workout in the morning, I feel ya! Let me know if this helps! Lindsay ________________________________
haha, well put Lisa. I love it! Lindsay________________________________
I am being reminded today why I run in the mornings rather in the afternoons. I chose to wait in the warmer afternoon temperatures today, but I've been feeling bloated today, so I'm hoping it subsides for my run after work today!
Thanks for the tip about chia seeds!

delicious. i love chia seed pudding, too!
I love chia seeds but have never even considered using them as a drink. And I'm glad you're feeling better. I too always head towards the natural cures rather than the non-natural.
I never heard of chia seeds…and I have a lot of gastric issues. I have GERD and no more gallbladder. Got really sick in fall of 2009. Lost 72 lbs. I am still on a very strict diet. If I cheat I get a lot of acid reflux and cramping. no food is worth it so far. I take probiotics every day. also eat one low fat activa yogurt every day, natural remedy for me the #1 is Braggs ACV.
LOVE chia seeds! Sorry about the indigestion, but glad you are feeling betta.
I have a very set schedule based on my tummy cycle too. Afternoon activity is not great for me and I have never ben able to find a natural remedy I am definitely going to try the Chia seeds. I actually have never used them for anything before!
I feel ya! And yes, love that cherry flavor too! Hehe.Lindsay
I had NO idea chia seeds helped with indigestion!!I have issues with a couple of different food groups — like bad — and when it gets awful the only thing that relieves me even a little bit is, unfortunately, Gas-X. Thank God I recently found their cherry flavored chewable… it tastes like candy and works in 7-10 minutes! Hallelujah.
I'm curious to hear what your readers natural remedies are – I need all the help I can get 😉 Your pictures crack me up.
Didn't know they helped with indigestion. I eat them straight up first thing in the AM and a couple times during the day. Spoonful in my mouth followed by some water. What can I say? I like the taste of them and the crunch.
I'm glad you found something natural that works for you. That Chia Fresca drink looks nice and refreshing!!
I'm so glad to learn I'm not the only one who gets mid-afternoon run indigestion! I find myself on the treadmill freaking out over whether I'm going to lose my treadmill if I hop off to run to the bathroom. 🙁 wwaahhh…Is your indigestion upper GI, though (you used the word "acid")? I'm trying to figure out if chia seeds will help me with this. I hafta find them somewhere… I'm having so much trouble on the chia search!
Another bonus of chia seeds!! 🙂 I'm using homemade gel right now that is loaded up with chia seeds and I love it!
Oh glad we can relate in that, as usual! Haha.Coconut aminos on fried rice sounds perfect! Let me know how it turns out.Lindsay
I can't workout in the afternoon either because it gives me indigestion…or at least it feels like that. I will have to check this out! Oh and I got the coconut aminos the other day. I can't wait to try them on my fried rice!
Again, needed this! I've been having a lot of tummy trouble the past few days and it is seriously hurting my runs! Really not fun. I'll try this little remedy!! Thanks!!
I know, I wish we could just tell our bodies to go with the flow, haha! Not happening here. Glad you are doing better though. xxoo Lindsay ________________________________
the drink its realy jelly conisistency, good thing. well maybe it isn't to me. haha! Jason and I can share a chia fresca when you are in AUSTIN! Lindsay ________________________________
AH! Love Chia Seeds, I'm so crossing my fingers that they help out!! Those cookies look delicious as well… Isn't it crazy how sometimes we have a shift in schedule, and even our bodies are thrown for a complete loop!? It's like my brain can't process it, so my body follows suit. So odd. Missed you too lady!!!!
YAY Heather! :)I have been using chia for years… I had NO idea it helps with indigestion… I am going to have to try this for Jason (suffers sorta frequently…) but I don't know if he will like the gel consistency… 🙂 sounds great to me!!
oh ya, ryan should totally check that out! Its so informational. Loved it. Probably good to do the cleanse before he starts training, right? hehe! Lindsay ________________________________

thats my schedule too! I'm happy to wake up early for that, plus coffee. hehe! The fresca doesn't get really gummy or anything. Its refreshing! Lindsay ________________________________
Oh wow, how interesting! I definitely want to try chia soda… Does it get thick/gooey at all? For my tummy, I too need a schedule. Ginger lemon water –> coffee –> go! –> breakfastHonestly, if I run into a conflict with this, I just wake up earlier and do it. Even when I have 8am class.
Trish, are those kinda like hemp seeds? I would love to get my hands on some of those! where did you buy them? I wonder if you could make hemp nut butter out of them. Thanks for this tip! Lindsay ________________________________
I have tons of digestive problems, and I recently started adding Hemp Hearts to my oatmeal in the morning. I just started a week ago, but they are similar to chia seeds in that they have good fats, lots of protein and are a whole food source. I've heard good things about them, so I'm hoping for the best!
I've never tried chia, but heard so many good things about it! I'm happy it works for you! I have tummy issues as well, and I found they're mostly food related, so it helps to leave those things away. Having some kind of routine is definitely worth a lot as well!Today, I have a little suggestion for you as well. It's not a challenge, rather asking for an act of symbolic solidarity with Japan. You can read more about it on my blog. I'd be happy you take part in it!
oh ya, you are the chia queen. Love them in my oats, they get so fluffy ya know? How was your bday? Looked like it was super fun!:) Lindsay ________________________________
oh ya, I bet they'd be awesome for you! Especially with all your tough runs! The EMZ fresca, now that has a ring to it!hehe.;) Lindsay________________________________
haha, yes I am sure they'd be weird in coffee. Try it post run or post workout. Its suppose to be really great for endurance athletes! 🙂 Lindsay ________________________________
let me know if you can't find them, maybe I can do a special package if not. 🙂 Lindsay ________________________________
I've been incorporating chia seeds into my breakfasts for about a month now. LOVE them!By the way, I adore your new header – so fun! 🙂
oh no, still go for it! I bet your post will be much more entertaining! plus I want to hear how you use chia seeds. Pretty please?!?!;) Lindsay .________________________________
you totally beat me to the punch!! I eat chia seeds too, I was going to do a post, but yours is much better! 🙂
Now that seems like a good idea – going to give that a shot as soon as I can find those seeds over here. Definitely suffer from tummy issues sometimes…
ok…never have tried chia seeds – yet. 🙂 I hear they are great, though. Might make my coffee a little weird, though. =D
YAY chia seeds! I do love those. Chia fresca……ummmm…wow. Would have NEVER thought of that!!awesome!
Wow! I didn't know how good chia was for you!
Oh snap, I'm going to have to give that stuff a tr(i).YAY HEATHER!!!!! WOOT WOOT!
You just made my morning girl!! So excited about that granola. I still have not tried chia seeds. I don't really have any natural remedies for tummy issues. Thankfully I seem to have a stomach of steel.

Bonus! I did NOT know that they were good for that too! Ryan is been on a gut cleanse kick lately so I will have to pass that PBS special on to him!
I always run in the AM, but I can run in the PM as long as I don't eat any tofu, beans, or dairy. LOL.
I love Chias! They have been helping my joints a lot during my training! Plus they help me with my tummy issues as well 🙂 I've never tried it in water, I'll have to try that for sure though!
