In a weeks time my husband will start training again. Now, like most runners, triathletes, etc. this is an exciting time. A new season, a fresh start. But for the hubs, it determines our future.
Will the injury come back?
Will the fear of injury hold him back?
Is his career over for good?
Is this HIS year to overcome?
What if, what if, what if???
Those are the thoughts that ponder in both our heads. Real, raw, and rational. But at the same time, what we question is not in our control. Am I right?
And IF it’s not in our control, what can we control in order to feel sane?
We can control the moment to moment encouragement.
Instead of focusing on what you can’t do, focus on what you can do…. THAT DAY!
When my husband runs for 20 minutes today, pain free. I say, “that’s awesome! Slow and steady is good!”
When my husband (or myself) is feeling unfit and “not where we used to be,” I say TO LOSE FITNESS is to GAIN FITNESS. Your motivation to get it back is stronger and SMARTER.
When you see others achieve their health and fitness goals, and you are still stuck in first gear…. Be kind. Be a Sherpa. Be happy WITH them and FOR them! It’s contagious! It makes you heal faster, I promise.
And if all else fails, then remember to just laugh and be thankful for what YOU CAN do!
Oh and while you’re at it, eat a pickle and peanut butter sandwich. I hear it cures all.
A little Motivational Marvelous Monday!
I almost forgot. A workout to finish this Monday!!
How do you motivate in the moment?
Cheers,
LC
p.s.
I’ve got 2 healthy bite reveals on Wednesday. One is a recipe (Halloween-ish perhaps) and the other is the November Flavor bite! WHOOP!
p.p.s
All those East coasters, please be safe today as Hurricane Sandy approaches. <3
If nothing else, you two are approaching this new cycle with a fresh attitude & outlook! 🙂 Things can only go UP and move forward. Glad to hear you’re both feeling strong! xoxo
thank you heather! your support and words mean the world to US!
As always your posts warm my heart! I am thankfully very safe after Hurricane Sandy hit the area. In the moment my motivation is being able to help others. It is so motivating for me to be able to help others because in that moment I know I can also help myself :-D.
and you are so good at that!
Oh, I was in lala land reading your beautiful post… and then… peanut butter and pickles? Gurl! What’s dat? Haha!
oh it’s so good! really, try it. hehe. i know, weirdly delicious.
It’s wednesday and I am pretty sure I needed to read this post today. Because. Yeah….what you said.
And the peanut butter and pickle ? well that sealed the deal. I am taking this as a personal WTFU call and focus on TODAY!!
did you eat one? I hope you did and i hope it made you feel all warm and fuzzy! <3
When it comes to injuries I’m all about what uou can do and going from there. Even if it is not or will never be where you were before that just means there are new and different things in store for you. And that is ok!
ahh so true and so wise jess. Thank you for the truth!
always so inspiring. You two are so cute. Thank you for being a blessing to me and so many others with your perspective. 😉
oh cinnamon, you know you are a blessing to me! always! I need an update on you soon!
I’m working on getting one together. 😉 It will be up soon. Again, thanks for all you do. Seriously. Its appreciated. 😉
Hi! I was recommended here by blogger http://thechangeofpace.wordpress.com/ because I was looking for a new-routine workout (apart from running)! And what you posted at the end is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you! I will be doing that! 🙂
so glad!! i love abby. and i’m glad you found what you needed friend. xxoo
My training doesn’t start back up until December, but I am going to try to get my butt back in the pool a bit this month. I’ll remember this when I suck at swimming and need to get that endurance back. 🙂
i will remind you, don’t worry. hehe
i often think the worst part of coming back from an injury is the mental games we play and not the physical. as always just love your attitude and gratitude!
amen amen! it’s the fear then once you get over that you are golden.
i love so much about this especially the part about being a sherpa when you can’t partake in something you want to do. i feel so blessed that i can run every day but i also can get frustrated because i wish i had more time to get in longer runs during the week. but i try to stay thankful that i am not injured and able to do this for myself. i send prayers for james!
Wishing your hubs all the best as the training season gets started! And the picture on the tricycle is priceless 🙂
thanks brittany! thats my blackmail picture. whoops! LOL!
Pickle..and…PEANUT BUTTER?!?!?! I have to try this..I don’t know why..because it sounds awful, but I feel like it will be good? HA! Keep staying motivated and having fun, that’s what life is all about!
i had a feeling that this combo just might be your new favorite! try it and let me know
Wishing the hubs the best! 🙂
pickles and peanut butter…. I have said that peanut butter is good with anything… hmm….
Oh Lindsay! You are so smart. I really appreciate post’s like this. Praying for an injury-free season for you guys!
There’s a great Proverbs 31 daily devotion that this post reminded me of:
Dear Lord, help me to trust that You’ve got it all figured out and to remember that I don’t.
oh i think i read that one. Thanks for echoing it. I needed it… desperately
So excited for your hubs. Best wishes as his training gets started!
I’m working on letting go of things I can’t control this week…we are supposed to fly to NYC on Friday so I can run the marathon on Sunday. At this point I don’t know if that will happen or not, but I’m totally at peace about it. What I’m going through is nothing compared to those that are dealing with the storm and its aftermath.
oh no! i bet a lot of people are in your same boat! I’ll be praying. I say if not, do your own version of the NYC marathon at home!
Love your perspective as usual, Lindsay! Thanks for sharing it with us and encouraging so many by being transparent about your struggles and ups and downs. Thinking of you and James and smiling because of your spirits – bound together in Christ and riding out the adventure of life (literally) together! So glad you have each other and that your ultimate hope and purpose is somewhere else other than careers…God is good! Rooting for James!
woman, i love your words! they always send me straight to God’s heart and comfort! Hugs!
Sending well wishes and prayers to you and your husband! xo
you are so good and praying, thank YOU!
Doing this workout today! I love incorporating the TRX into a circuit-functional training at its best!!
oh yea! report back if you can!
Ohhh friend, I’m pulling for the hubs (and his beautiful sherpa!) big time — I am sending prayers your way as usual for strength and continued perseverance as you both strive to overcome, to reach new heights together. Whatever the outcome, just to know how blessed you are to be ABLE is a wonderful thing isn’t it?
yes, yes, yes! i need to let that sink in more. You are so wise. as always! you guys ok up there post hurricane?
Here’s to an injury and pain-free season for both of you! Crossing all my limbs!!!
jen, thank you! we’ll take those limbs crossing! hehe
What a beautiful, inspiring & motivational post <3. Also, I wish your husband a wonderful recovery!
Thank you friend. Those wishes mean the world! <3
Inspiring post my friend! Whatever the season brings you will have each other to lean on and support one another. It’s so important everyday to be grateful of what we do have in life! Instead of complaining about the not so good things. Like I recently strained my neck and can’t workout right now, and was upset at first, but now I feel blessed that this is temporary! I can get to my workouts as soon as this heals, and I have my family, friends and health, which are way more important than working out! Hoping everything with hubby works out for the best! xox
yes, temporary is key! you will be stronger from it too! oh lisa, you get wiser each day, and stronger!
Peanut butter & Pickles? Man sounds like me when I was pregnant – just add a slab of steak and some vegemite to that sandwich and that was my favourite 😉 Hehe.
Yay, am thinking of you guys! Go Kiwi Go.
oh ya, i would eat that, no joke, and i’m not pregnant. LOL!
You are pretty amazing and awesome, you know that, right? Wishing James the best as he starts training again.
oh no, i think it’s the people around me that are amazing! hugs. be safe driving!
Oh man, I’m thinking of you guys and will continue to send positive thoughts your way.
You’re so right in every single thing you said. I was nodding my head along to every point as I was reading…until I got to the part about the pickle and pb sandwich!
I totally agree on being happy for other people and focusing on what you CAN do. It truly is contagious and motivates me to challenge myself in other ways and get better — mentally and physically!
amen amen! it makes you feel like you are celebrating too, ya know? those goals!
I truly thing that you and James are so lucky to have each other for support and motivation. I’m a little teary eyed over here.
Wait Wait Don’t Tell (best radiso show ever) does a blog feature called sandwich Monday and today’s sandwich is peanut butter pickle!! They put in a plug for reeses to make a pb pickle cup!! Genius, I tell you.
wanna know what my new favourite quote is about what if??
“Do not let the fear of WHAT IF ruin the beauty of WHAT IS”
isn’t it awesome?? it’s on my waterbottle currently.
now that is my favorite quote!!
You have a great attitude – which is why I love reading your posts! They motivate me. As always, my prayers are with you – to have the strength for whatever the new training season brings!
Wishing James all the best this season! I have a feeling this is his year!!
What a great reminder to be grateful what we can do! I am so blessed I am able to workout 😉
i like your feeling. hold onto it tight!
I love your philosophy and outlook on life, its why we should be sisters, or maybe we are long lost ones? 🙂
I will hope and pray every day that things go well for hubby and he does recover and hope he does better every day! We know, it’s in gods hands <3
Love you and I will be ordering healthy bites, I need to! Excited to hear these two new flavors!
pretty sure we are, long lost sisters or cousins or something. I swear!
It’s a hard thing to shake, that post-injury anxiety. It’s like holding your breath waiting for the storm to hit. But we won’t get far without breathing, and we won’t do ourselves any good by comparing, questioning, and griping about the way things were. Haves are better than have-nots, and cans are better than cannots. No injuries allowed – they have cooties 😉
ahh yes, the storm. it’s been brewing for quite some time. And i think, yes, i think, we have built up strong enough muscles to swim our way out. God willing.
Have’s are so so much better!
I love this! It is true that being happy for others and encouraging others helps you to heal! I’m praying for you all. God has BIG plans for you two! I’m just so excited I get to witness what He is going to do!
you are one encouraging witness! Gods perfect plan. Love it. and love you.
I love this post! Thank you 🙂
I’m trying to share but it’s not allowing me 🙁
what? no! maybe it will work in a bit. sorry.
You have the perfect attitude. I got a little hard on myself today with running and I keep reeling it in and reminding myself how far I’ve come. Not everyday is a PR day. Some days are just focusing on today and where you are at that moment. I have no fear that you two will find your path. You’re both so positive and you focus on the right things! You know you have my thoughts and prayers for a great season as a team (the two of you are really such an amazing team!)!
never be hard on yourself! you’ve come so so far,and that my friend is an accomplishment to relish in, even in the bad runs. <3
Oh, I hope this is his year too!! But I’m so glad you both have such a great perspective. Life is not ours to control. Sending fast healing and speedy training thoughts and prayers your way!
thank you friend. Love those healing thoughts, i think they are PRICELESS!
Um pickles and PB??? I’m just going to trust you on that one LOL. And you are definitely right – when you lose that fitness, that ability to workout it teaches you a new perspective. You are happy for 20 minutes and you have a new appreciation for being able to be active.
yes! i love seeing him being able to run. I mean this guy used to train 5 hours a day 7 days a week. Now he is happy for 20 minutes. small but steady!
Damn you’re awesome.
I need you as my LIFE SHERPA to help me carry all the stuff happening in my cranium.
and vice versa. wanna team up?
I hope this is THE year! You guys are beyond due for it.
I want that sandwich. (Really, i want any sandwich that doesn’t involve white protein or asparagus.)
in less than a week you can have pickles and bbq sauce! now that’s motivation! hehe.
Beautiful post as usual:) I am praying that his injury stays far far away and this is his year! You are such an incredibly supportive wife. That sandwich looks and sounds really really yummy!
oh those prayers are precious, thank you! i know you can relate. and i am so grateful for your ongoing encouragement. now, let’s finally meet, k?
I could write a book about dealing with injuries, and all that comes as a result of that (which might be worse than the injuries were in the first place), but I’ll spare your comment section from the ramblings. I sorta want to print this post and hang it on my fridge. But the pickle and PB sandwich freaked me out. lol. 🙂 But seriously, I love the idea to “motivate the moment”. It reminds me a bit of another goal I’ve been working on, and that is being present in the moment. I feel as though both these ideas go hand in hand, and their combination is powerful. Thanks, Lindsay.
i say you write that book! someone needs too! hehe. But you are so wise, love the present goal.
bahhhhh! LOVE THIS POST. I have definitely struggled with this anxiety before and while I have thought to focus on what I CAN do in other areas of my life…never thought to apply it to situations like these of the past! such a heartwarming, positive and uplifting post! this made me smile just to read:) and i loved the photos too:)
gosh how i know you can relate. and you have overcome so much, look where you are! be thankful each day. <3
I love this!! Celebrate the small victories, and the special moments and the progress each and every day. And sherpa sherpa sherpa!!! (yay for healthy bites flavors!!!)
sherpa saved me! makes me feel like i am healing not only myself but james as well. Ya know?
Love this – I do Gratitude Monday so motivate Monday is good too! 🙂
ahh great minds think alike, or maybe i just think like you. YOU Are Always motivational!
AS ARE —- > YOU!!! 🙂
Lately I’ve been using the “I get to” instead of “I have to” to motivate in the moment. It’s amazing what 3 little words can do!
so so true, and humbling!
you two are SO ADORABLE! 🙂 very inspiring post. coming back from injury is tough and I hope that things go well for him and you. i know you are the best sherpa you can be! <3
oh thank you katie. That means more than you know!
Awesome and inspiring post! Sometimes it can be tough to see other reach goals while we’re still in “first gear” but you’re right, you totally heal faster by encouraging others 🙂
oh yes, i know you know this feeling Allie. xxoo
No matter what this new training season will bring, know that you are wherever you are for a purpose. All the struggles and successes are worth it knowing who has your back… God most certainly has yours, and I’ll be cheering on the sidelines all the way up north 😉
I almost bust a gut with the pic of James on the toy bike… LOVE it!
oh thank you friend. that is such a wonderful feeling. to be supported in faith! <3
