Today I had my long run….in the kitchen. You know, my cardio I talked about it my last post. Yes, this long run was based in the kitchen and boy was it work. But the runners baker’s high was well worth it!
Twenty plus batches of Healthy Bites made and a few new flavors for two of my favorite Boston customers.
Any guesses? I’ll give you a hint, there is dark chocolate.
And with each “long run” (in the kitchen), we learn something new.
- Wear comfy shoes
- Refuel halfway
- Don’t forget to buy extra rolls of paper towels and wax paper
- Hydrate
- Make sure you have a really good long movie on.
- Don’t answer your phone with honey and peanut butter on your fingers.
- In fact, don’t rub your eye with peanut butter and honey on your fingers.
- Don’t bother wearing an apron, batter will always gets on your sleeves.
- Call for back up when you drop some on the floor. (aka Sadie)
- And last but not least………beg the hubs to clean the kitchen afterwards.
If begging doesn’t work, just offer him a few treats.
Apple Fritter, Peach Cobbler a La Mode, and the Mystery bite.
Do you have lessons from your last long run?
And when I say “run” I mean whatever activity that took you hours to complete.
Cheers,
LC
p.s.
Good luck to all the NYC marathoners tomorrow and congrats to all those who raced today. I know there were quite a few!
But when it is over the “Long Run” is always worth it right? The healthy bites look amazing and you are amazing for conquering it all in one long day. 🙂
P.S. I hope the hubs cleaned the kitchen for you. 😉
it is worth it! and yes, the hubs helped clean the whole house. Such a stud!
Great post girl!! These look fab and I could eat them all now 🙂
Ahhhh….ok, well my long run was my actual first “long run” – 5 miles 😉 LOL! But it was up on top of a mountain in Whistler here and it was below freezing, way to do a first race ever! LOL
xxoo
and i’ve been meaning to email you. SO SO EXCITED for your run. I loved the pictures!! Keep ’em coming Kris and congrats!
mmm, those look yummy! i always forget to wear an apron anyways 😉
aprons are over rated, right? Well unless its a really cute one. haha.
have a good movie on, that is cute. Look out Betty Crocker! Seriously, you keep posting pictures — so cruel, makes me so hungry:)
It took me forever to organize my attic, mainly bc I kept leaving the attic due to ADD. meh.
The fact that you organized your attic is impressive to me!
Yes! Comfy shoes are a must for sure.
Hahahha! That’s how I feel when I have my marathon Christmas cookie baking session. Always buy extra flour, sugar, butter and parchment paper.
Plus I run the dishwasher about 20 times.
yes!! We always run out of something on christmas eve and the stores are closed. haha. Lesson learned.
When I do my long meal preps on weekends it takes a few hours… more if it’s sweltering hot in the summer… my biggest kicker is just trying to clean as I go… or at least be mindfull of making less mess to clean up when I’m done lol
i was trying to do that too, then i actually just made it worse. Darn it! We try to be so good too!
The Healthy Bites idea is just awesome!!
I was making something the other day and tried to grab the phone w/ batter on my hands… what a mess!!
our poor phones, i’m sure there are mounds of food particles stuck in there somewhere. haha.
Holy treats!!! Those look so good!!!! Happy Monday my friend 🙂 Have an amazing week!
good gosh I love you.
Haha so for a workout like this, do you take gels… or just lick the bowl? lol
LOL! Well so far licking the spoon, bowl, and all the measuring cups of nut butter has worked well. I set a new PR!
😉
haha we never wear aprons, we are are so messy in the kitchen. we go through clothes like crazy
agreed. I weather my ratty clothes for that anyway, more fun! haha.
And give THANKS (if you can) for the blessing of being able to do that ….(and to make some cash doing something cool).
So…did he clean up?
YES, i am thankful for this opportunity. Blessing indeed, a great reminder Missy. He did help me clean later. Such a good guy!
p.s.
I’m thinking i have door vs wall that I am running in to. Praying for Gods strength to open that door and walk through, amen?!
I’ll pray with you!
Try shifting perspective…see the larger picture. “Oh! That’s not a wall…it’s actually the door. I HAVE to get though it.”
It is our perspective (how we see things) that may hold us back…
In my experience? It is FEAR – flat out fear — that is blinding me, making me unable to see the “wall” as a “door.” I’m scared to go through it to get to the other side. I am praying to see things through God’s eyes. Not Fear (aka evil).
Love how I can ramble to you…lol. I know you get it.
your HBs are the ultimate incentive 🙂 I would clean your dishes with my tongue for some of those babies! I can’t wait until your big and famous and have our own line of snack foods. Just don’t forget us “little people” 😉 love you!
oh i hope so! dream come true. I’d have one bite called PB&jenny made with PB flour just for you.
😛
hmm lessons from my last long run. Does 25 minutes running count as long?? It will have to cause I’ve not been near the kitchen for longer than 25min recently! I also learned not to touch phones with pb & honey on my fingers…bad idea. 😉 those bites look delish! I want to eat them off my screen!
yes yes! that is a long run! I am so excited for you too. Lets keep these runs going.
too cute lindsay! i always get something in my eye when i am crazy woman in the kitchen. putting all that time in is hard work and it tiring too. i learned today not to be so hard on myself-i have come a long way!
you sure have!! and I could not be more excited for you!!
Ha, endurance training in bites! Shipping cross-country now? I might just have to put in an order 😉
It is currently taking me HOURS to get back to DC – on the train from Connecticut. It’s a comfy ride, and cool to go through NYC, but man does it get boring just sitting here…
oh i’ve been shipping for a while now. I should have totally sent you some. Perfect for the marathon. Tell you what, I’ll fuel your whole race with healthy bites if you come to Austin!! Deal?
what fun!!! Great music is a must when I am doing a long kitchen run!
oh yes, great music is key. I think thats why I love holiday musix so much!
LOVE it!! SO excited to try the mystery bites made just for us. You are the best bloggy friend ever. I heart you!!
Anything for you! xoxo
LOL! I LOVE this post! First, because I see some yummy healthy bites that will soon be mine! Yay! 🙂 And second because I love the play on the ‘long run’ since there’s a lot of that going around in these parts long-run wise and it was a fun way of going about it! Definitely sounds like a great outing!! hehe.
I gotta get my long run in some how, right? tee hee. Can’t wait for you to try the new bite and yes, can’t wait to hear about your PARTAY!
haha looks like you had a long run in the kitchen just in time for the nyc marathon! i think the perfect way to refuel mid kitchen run is to test the product!
yes, i think i was trying to convince myself i was cooler than the real NYC runners. DIdn’t happen, but i gave it a good shot. hehe.
I have a kitchen marathon every year before Christmas when I make Christmas chocs for my family and friend. I also make “healthy bites” (although I didn’t call them like that), such as almond apricot balls with coconut coating etc. Fabulous stuff up there! 😀
that sounds delicious. WIsh I lived closer to you during the holidays. I’d love to participate in your marathon. 🙂
Oh yeah, we’d definitely do that together then! And enjoy a nice glass of wine afterwards to recover from the strain! 😉
Woohoo, you survived!! Way to go Lindsay! I’m sure James was more than happy to do the dishes for you :o)
Nicole
he is good at that. I love a man in the kitchen…CLEANING!
i learned a few lessons when i was a baker/pastry chef in the bay area:
1.) have two separate sets of measuring spoons/cups for dry and wet ingredients so that you don’t have to wash the teaspoon after pouring vanilla when you want to measure baking powder
2.) take notes! there’s always something a little tricky about a recipe, no matter what, and it pays to write it down when you’re doing it so that next time will be easier!
3.) try to at least like what you’re making. if you’re hating it, i swear to goodness, it shows up in the food! 🙂
oh you are so wise. I love these lessons. I definitely need to start taking more notes. and yes, i love what i make…thats a MUST!
PS What was the mystery flavour?? 😛 xyx
Hahaha! Nice stamina, Lindsay! 😀 I love your lessons in the kitchen, lol! 😛 What am I learning about my long run aka: time between now and moving to NZ? Be patient, stay focused on the present, make the most of where you are NOW, and who you are with NOW…there is no such thing as Limbo, because NOW is all we have. I definitely need reminding of this sometimes, I can get focused on the future, and stressed etc. But it’s a learning curve. I needed to remind myself and consider what I have learned – so thankyou for asking! <3
yes, we are living NOW! We need to enjoy the transitions and now worry about the tomorrows. Easier said than done. haha. And wait a minute, are you moving back to NZ??
Hahaha…totally easier said than done. But worth practising <3 Yup! We have a tentative plan to move back at the end of 2013…very tentative 🙂 xyx
My shoe of choice for kitchen exercise would be the ugg boot, or alternatively the flip flop. Lessons from my last long run – need to find a decent hand cream… too much washing of dishes = cracked hands. Boo. Suppose I have to expect sporting related injuries.
oh yes, i agree. My poor hands are rough. maybe a nice manicure would help. hehe.
Long runs in the kitchen are my favorite kind of long runs:) I plan on doing a marathon in the kitchen the day before Thanksgiving!
P.S. this is my first year going through the Holiday’s gluten free, do you have any tips?
those are the best marathons! plus i’m sure you’ll have a nice crowd cheering. haha.
Great job! The healthy bites look delicious!
i must confess, they are. I stole a bit or two…or three…
Now that’s MY kind of workout. 🙂
wish i could feed you some of these for post run!
Is one of those dozen for “me”?? 🙂 Love you!
yep…..well, you know. For someone like you! tee hee.
Don’t “clean” by swiping all contents of your desk into one giant box. And don’t repeat this 3 times until the box is overflowing and bills, etc. get last in the pile. Oops……………. Still working on my “long run”. 🙂 Congrats on finishing yours! Those bites look delicious!
haha, now that sounds like a grand idea! good think i know your “tricks” of the trade.
🙂
Long run, well I havent actually done a long run in a month so my memory fails me. Mystery bites?! Yummy I love love your bites!
Looks like overall, you had a great run 🙂
It must be a good feeling of being productive!
My last long run was prepping for a 6 hour health fair where I was presenting on 3 different topics and doing a smoothie/snack demo. That was stressful, and I vowed not to schedule myself for things like that (or to do it when I have time to prep earlier than the day before!).
yes it does. I am taking monday off, thats for sure. You know how working weekends go……tired. Hope your weekend was relaxing. No planning!
LOL – love the lessons learned! I am so bad about trying to answer phones or turn oven knobs with dirty hands. Oops 😉 And I always end up with food up the sleeves – how does that happen exactly? Or sometimes in my hair too. Really cute! The apple fritter flavor sounds amazing!
h yes, it was in my hair and on my ear. I’m on big peanut butter ball! haha.
You’re too cute! Glad you survived the long run : ). Your customers will be super happy!
Enjoy the rest of your wknd!
Love!
yes, i know you can appreciate. Such a loyal customer you are.
xoxo
how are those “firsts” going?
Hehe you are too clever lady 🙂 I appreciate your tips for making it through a long “run” like this!
now you must teach me your REAL long run tips. Youre the pro there!
I’ll gladly do the kitchen cleaning for healthy bites! They look amazing!
come on over…..its still waiting to be cleaned!
Ha, I love this! It sounds like the results were delicious and probably smell a lot better than how I smell after a run! Sometimes I do feel like I’m burning calories when cooking meals for other people, like Thanksgiving…makes that second serving of pumpkin pie (gluten free, clearly) seem well deserved!
yes, i definitely work up an appetite just mixing! haha. Gluten free pumpkin pie is worth the kitchen long run!
This is perfect! When not baking, go sleeveless, when baking go with long sleeves! Definitely wear good shoes! I hope you had some good kitchen therapy today! I wish I could have been there. xoxo
i so wish you were! i know you’d be teaching me a few lessons. Gotta learn from the pros!
My long runs involve books and study sessions. I’ve learned to mini stretching and mental breaks, not try to take on too much, and always bring snacks! I was just studying at a cafe but had to cut it short because I was too hungry! And now I’m clearly not studying anymore hah.
studying is hard work! You need that break and refuel time. I can’t think on an empty stomach either!
I used to have long runs in the kitchen every weekend. Now my long runs are at my desk working. Sigh. I’m kind of jealous. I’ll do your dishes for some healthy bites!
I’d be happy to. Thats an easy trade!
I can totally relate to the kitchen long run when you beg someone to do the dishes. It’s the last thing I want to do after spending all day working on food!
On my last long run, I learned to get it done in the morning. I was at camp, and the second half of the day was taken up by a four hour thunderstorm so we were locked in our cabins the whole time! Talk about cabin fever…
I don’t know how people can do long runs in the afternoon. I get anxious just waiting around. haha.
