If you follow me on instagram, you’ll see a lot of pictures of fish. Yes, we love our sablefish (SIZZLEFISH)!
One of our favorite types of fish to eat is Sablefish. The funny thing is, not many people have heard of sablefish and often ask me about this delicious fish. So I’d thought I’d write a post about it, because I know you’re just dying to know, right? That’s sarcasm. But jokes aside, let’s face it, you are curious! As you should be.
Sablefish (also known as Alaskan Black Cod) has been around for years!Fishermen have been harvesting this fish since the late 1800s. It’s known as the “chocolate” of fish due to it’s delicious buttery texture and flavor! Now you’re thinking about chocolate and butter, aren’t you? Haha.
But this fish is actually more nutrient dense than chocolate. Let’s take a look at the nutrition facts here.
What makes sablefish so healthy?
- Low in mercury
- High in the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which have tremendous heart and brain health benefits.
- Cold water fish – higher in good fats, which can lower blood pressure and improve overall blood cholesterol levels.
- Rich in nutrients like Vitamin B12
Are you ready to cook with this buttery dish?
Here’s our favorite sablefish recipe. It’s pretty simple and pairs perfectly with a summer salad.
PrintTamari Baked Fish
- Total Time: 25 minutes
- Yield: 2 1x
- Diet: Gluten Free
Description
Ginger Lime Tamari Baked Fish (Sablefish)
Ingredients
- two 5 ounce sablefish fillets
- ¼ cup gluten free tamari sauce
- 2–3 tablespoon lime juice, to taste
- Neutral oil of choice. Sesame works too if you want more of an Asian inspired flare
- 1 tbsp honey
- black pepper and sea salt to taste
- ¼ tsp ground ginger
- Optional- pinch of red chili pepper flakes seasoning
- Note: if you don’t have tamari you can use gluten free soy sauce
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400F
- Place sablefish on a foiled lined pan or in an oiled baking dish.
- In a small bowl, combine the gluten free tamari sauce, lime juice, oil, honey, black pepper and sea salt (about ¼ teaspoon each), and ginger. Mix to combine. Brush the marinade mix over the sablefish fillets. Let the fish marinade for 5 minutes while the oven preheats.
- Once the oven is preheated, place the sablefish in the oven for 10-15 minutes. 10 minutes per inch of thickness. Remove from oven and let the fish rest for 5 minutes before serving.
- Prep Time: 10 min
- Cook Time: 15 min
- Category: seafood
- Method: oven
- Cuisine: american
See, it’s easy!
Next time you’re at the store, look for sablefish! Or I highly recommend ordering from Sizzlefish. That way you don’t even have to leave your house. Ha!
Ever tried Sablefish?
Cheers,
LC

Tiff @ Love, Sweat, & Beers
We almost never have fish at the house. Event though the hubs is originally from New England, we’re just not seafood people (except shrimpieeees). I do try to eat salmon now and again since I know it’s good for me, but I usually end up gulping it down halfway through my dinner just to get it over with. haha
LCCotter
i kinda think you’d like this one Tiff. It doesn’t taste like fish, promise!
Erin @ The Almond Eater
Well gee, now I want fish! Or butter and chocolate… 😉

Hello Lindsay,
This is very good information about Sablefish. I don’t think I’ve actually ever tried it before. I will have to look for it at Sprouts or TJ’s. It looks both delicious and nutritious! Thanks for the info!
~Amy 🙂
Polly @ Tasty Food Project
I love eating fish! Since I’m from the northwest, I’m lucky to have access to many different kinds of fish. I don’t think I’ve ever had sablefish but it looks delicious! This recipe also looks very flavorful and I’m sure it’s something I will enjoy!
LCCotter
oh i need to move closer to you then! haha
jill conyers
This sounds so good! That may be because I can’t seem to eat enough fish lately. I rave it and I’m enjoying every single bite! I’ll look for sablefish this weekend.
LCCotter
Just come visit and I’ll share
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero
I love crab, shrimp, and scallops, but just cannot get into fish. I actually tried 4 different types prepared 4 different ways last week and still a no go. However, for some reason spicy tuna rolls – now those I can do!!
LCCotter
I kind of think you’d like sablefish. It’s more like scallops
Heather @ better with veggies
I LOVE black cod – it’s one of my favorite fishes to order when I’m eating out, because it is so decadent in flavor!
LCCotter

Tori
That sizzlefish was soooo good at Blend, and I’ve been debating back & forth about getting it, but after seeing the success everyone else has had, I’m definitely going to give it a try! And then give your recipe a try with it 🙂
LCCotter
Yes! Do it and report back
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries
Never heard of it, but it sure does sound incredible! And now I WANT some!
LCCotter
I say we go back to blend and have sizzlefish make it haha
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table
This is one of my favorites – I just ate my last piece. Sizzlefish is the jam, and I love the chocolate analogy. I do that for all my favorite – sea bass is the pork belly of the sea, swordfish is the steak… and we all know the chicken. 😉
Samantha @ The Faithful Runner
I’ve never heard of or tried sablefish, but your recipe looks fantastic! 🙂
LCCotter
Thanks Sam!
Jody - Fit at 56
I am not a fish fan unfortunately since it is good for you but it still looks delish!!!! 🙂
LCCotter
Chicken works too!
Jennifer F
I love fish, but have never had sablefish . . . . . can I just get it down at the HEB?
LCCotter
We should have looked today!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen)
Not sure if I’ve ever specifically had sabelfish? I will admit to considering putting fish back in my diet. I really don’t want to eat meat (being that I haven’t eaten it in years for so many personal reasons), but I know the nutritional value of fish and for the sake of nutrition, I’ve considered it. This really does sound fantastic! I bet my guys would love it!
LCCotter
You don’t eat any??? Girl! You need!! Especially now with training. Have you tried hay bison or lamb? We need to talk haha
Lucie@FitSwissChick
I LOVE fish!! I don’t think I ever had sablefish, the variety here is not very huge, unfortunately.
But I definitely want to try the recipe, love the combo of honey and ginger!!
LCCotter
Another reason you need to come to states!!!
Jaclyn @ BumpSweat
I’ve never HEARD of Sablefish, let alone tried it. Sounds tasty! Especially that recipe you posted 🙂
LCCotter
You’d love!! Low mercury for preggers
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
I need to convince my mom to subscribe me to Sizzlefish…I would love it! My grocery only carries a limited number of fish varieties. i.e salmon, tilapia, and flounder 😛
LCCotter
You. Would. Looooooove
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast
I was curious to know! And your recipe is making me hungry even though I just finished breakfast. The tamari/lime/honey combo sounds amazing- we do something similar on salmon sometimes- soo good!
LCCotter
Fish for breakfast is allowed!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat
Mm this sounds so good! I love fish and really wish tuna didn’t have its mercury issue. I’d eat it every day if I could! Having said that, there aren’t many kinds of fish I don’t like as long as they’re cooked properly, and I might just pick up some sablefish this weekend!
LCCotter
Me too!! Boo mercury
Tina Muir
ooooh I love cod, so this would be a great fish….just need to see if our store has it! Interesting that I have a fish recipe today, and I have seen a lot of them on other blogs. Must be a fish day haha! If it is that good for me, sablefish should become one of my ways of adding more omega 3s. Love the sauce you used too! Yum!
LCCotter
I’ll make your recipe and you make mine, k?
Maryea {happy healthy mama}
I don’t think I’ve ever seen sablefish in the store, but I’ll definitely look for it now!

ok i’d never heard of sablefish before but with all those nutritional perks, i want to try some! your recipe looks fantastic!
LCCotter
Mamas need their fish!
Michele @ paleorunningmomma
This is great info for me since I’m a fish lover who hasn’t tried this yet. My husband is not into it so for me I do single portions for lunch to put on salad, but I eat fish nearly every day for lunch. Thanks for sharing your recipe!
LCCotter
Sizzlefish has single portions! Check them out for sure!
Lauren
Oh wow I have never heard or tried this fish! I love cod though and a buttery flavour cod sounds inviting! The recipe looks great too! I love trying different fish, especially fresh from the sea on holiday!
Tara Newman
That WAS helpful. We eat fish 3-4 times a week and I am always looking to change it up. We have a fish monger who delivers to our house (John can be persuasive!). We tried sockeye salmon this week and I REALLY did not like it. And I am not picky. Ps. super cute model you got there!
LCCotter
I think you’d like sablefish. Sockeye can be too fishy. Alaskan salmon is better if possible
