So let’s talk fish. You know we love it, especially for those health perks! But you know what? I probably get a text or email each week asking how to properly prepare fish. Or what do with salmon, sablefish, cod, etc. People are scared of fish!  Well, not fish in general, but they are scared of cooking fish. But can I let you in on a secret?
IT’S SOOOOOOOOOO EASY to cook.
But I will confess, when I first started cooking fish (years ago), I had no clue what to put on it. I guess you could say this sushi loving girl was clueless. But I had to start somewhere! I asked a lot of my friends and family for their favorite seafood recipes and I wrote them all down. Then I just started experimenting in the kitchen. It was all about taking action, trial and error. Thank goodness there was not a lot of error, in fact, I found fish is pretty versatile!
There are several different ways you can season fish, but today we’ll start with the basics and I’ll leave you with one of my FAVORITE gbaked cod recipes; sound good?
TIPS FOR SEASONING FRESH FISH
- SALMON – Great with dill weed, fennel seed, rosemary (see above picture) and lemon or orange zest. And if you like spice, you could always add chili pepper or curry powder combined with garlic. Salmon is the meaty fish, so strong flavors are do-able!
- TROUTÂ Â –Â Great with spring like spices and herbs;onion, bay leaves, cayenne, cilantro, orange zest, and shallots. My favorite combo is cilantro and orange zest!
- HADDOCK – These white fish are great with fresh herbs. Haddock and Cod also pair well with Indian or Oriental spices like garam masala, ginger soy, and turmeric. You can season your fish with these Indian spices then add a little fresh yogurt on top!
- SCALLOPS- Scallops are one of my favorite to season. You can make them buttery by sautéing in butter with garlic or onion, or you can bake in a chicken broth with a bit of parsley. Simple and delicious!
So you see, seasoning your fish can be quite easy. All you need are the right spices/marinades and a fresh piece of fish!
Okay, enough seasoning talk. Let’s just get to this super easy and healthy recipe for ginger lime tamari baked cod!

- Total Time: 20 minutes
- Yield: 2 1x
Description
Ginger Lime Tamari Baked Cod
Ingredients
- 2 Alaskan Cod fillets – We use Sizzlefish
- ¼ cup gluten free tamari sauce
- 2–4 tablespoon lime juice
- Sesame or avocado oil (about 1 tbsp)
- 1 tbsp honey
- Black pepper and sea salt
- 2–3 slices of fresh ginger.
- Optional- chili pepper seasoning
Instructions
- Clean your fillets and then place on baking dish.
- Next combine your gluten free tamari sauce, lime juice, oil, honey, ginger, black pepper and sea salt (about ¼ teaspoon each for seasoning).
- Mix in a bowl then drizzle over your fish fillets.
- There will be some juice that is sitting in dish while baking. Be sure to leave out the ginger till the last few minutes.
- Roast at 400F for about 10-15 minutes.
- I usually cover with foil for the first 8 minutes then uncover for the rest when I add my ginger.
- Optional -Garnish with chili pepper flakes/seasoning

Note: if you don’t have tamari you can use gluten free soy sauce or even balsamic vinegar

P.S this entire baked cod recipe takes less than 30Â minutes to make. I paired it with quinoa and sauteed zucchini. BAM! Now let’s eat!

This is amazing! I LOVE salmon with a little teriyaki sauce or simple sea salt and pepper with olive oil. If I’m making cod, my mother likes to use this white wine lemon caper sauce that you would also find in Italian restaurants! SO good. I would love to try making a Moroccan-style or Indian-style seafood dish too! I just have to find a great way to season them!

I don’t cook fish as often as I’d like, mainly for cost reasons. Cod is one of the more affordable ones, and so tasty! I like all seafood 🙂 especially crab, shrimp, and scallops.

Fish is by far my favorite protein choice! And I agree, it used to intimidate me as well. I always would order it at restaurants, but would be afraid to cook it at home because I HATE overcooked fish. While I did stumble at first, I realized with practice that it is pretty easy! I cooked my first Mahi Mahi on the charcoal grill this past weekend for some friends we had over (it was a true test for me, cooking for others!) and it came out EXCELLENT. Before heading up to the cabin we realized our outside freezer was having really bad ice build up and it was over packed and my oldest didn’t shut it all the way and luckily we caught it but we really need to clean it out and get some ice out of there. I keep it pretty simple because I just love it so much I never get tired of plain old garlic, salt and pepper. Maybe some Old Bay.

I’ve never understood why people are hesitant to cook fish. Like you said, it’s the easiest thing to make and often you don’t even need to thaw depending what you’re making, I haven’t tried tamari on fish. I feel like you can put anything on fish and it’s delicious!

Love my fish! We are so lucky here in that I can get brown trout from our local Scottish rivers, in our fishmonger. I love to bake them wrapped in tin foil with some slices of lemon and freshly chopped parsley. Yum!

People are often so hesitant to cook fish. But really, it is one of the easiest things possible! And depending on the type of fish, you can really have a great deal of fun with the seasonings, maybe even more so than other proteins. Great tips, and ginger and lime with anything is A+ in my book!
