Third post of the week. Yes, that’s pretty good for me. If I hit 4 then I will actually impress myself. I aim for 3-4 posts week but lately, since the hubs isn’t racing, I haven’t had much to share. Well, I take that back, I haven’t had IMPORTANT things to share. But when Amanda asked me to participate in her August Clean Eats Challenge, I was more than happy to join in.
Clean Eating to me means just focusing on WHOLESOME food with REAL ingredients. We already eat this way 80% of the time, but I think this challenge will help us budget more for those foods. Ya know?
So clean eats. I consider butter a clean it. Yes, it pure, and it’s real. Wanna hear a crazy story of how Crisco came about? Read here. I guarantee that you will never look Crisco the same way again.
I consider WHOLE EGGS clean eats. Yes I use egg whites in baking and in other dishes at t times, but think of what nutrients a WHOLE EGG provides versus just the white. Click here to see for yourself.
I consider meat a clean eat, although you can definitely find other protein sources if you are vegan, vegetarian. One of our favorite meals is gluten free spicy sausage and zucchini pizza. Savory and delicious!
I consider wine and dark chocolate clean eats. Yes, you heard that right. Rich in antioxidants too. Just don’t drink the whole bottle or eat the whole bar in one sitting.
I guess my point is this; clean eats don’t have to be restrictive. Focus on ingredients and nutrients, not calories. Keep it local if possible, and budget for the organic meats, dairy, and vegetables! Or in my case, the good wine! haha.
Let’s end with a little list. I know this girl will like my list.
5 ways to use broccoli slaw, because apparently broccoli slaw is the new OIAJ in blog world. Right Stuftmama?
- mixed with full fat Greek yogurt, canned tuna or salmon, balsamic dressing, a little bit of red bell pepper, and place on toast, tortillas, etc.
- mix with cottage cheese, carrots, and salsa for a delicious snack.
- sauté in coconut oil or butter then add 2 eggs and scramble. Serve on top of corn tortillas with chili pepper and avocado.
- sauté in sesame oil and then add 2 tbsp. crushed nuts, nut butter, and sriracha sauce. Mix in with shrimp and soba noodles for a spicy noodles dish.
- Mix slaw with shredded chicken, spices, and BBQ sauce. Place on top of sweet potato with a little organic sour cream. SO GOOD!
Well, that’s it. Let me know if you try any of these.
What’s your definition of clean eating?
Cheers,
LC

Hi Lindsay,
for me wine would be clean if it were actual wine, made from grapes. Most of the wines on the market are made from dried powders and other chemicals, you can actually taste the difference.
Other things that I consider a clean eat: whole milk and cheeses, natural herbs and spices, pickles:)
MAriella
wine from powder? now that’s just wrong! but real cheese and whole milk, yes!
love your list and totally agree that “clean” should open doors, not close them!
also, “clean” is a mindset. i’m aiming for a clean mind, free of restrictive thoughts and negative paradigms. and “clean” is a lifestyle, unpolluted of negative energy and toxic relationships!
i like that better. Clean mind, means accepting and treating our bodies right too! well said T!
Love this! I love whole eggs!! Egg whites just don’t cut it!
When are we having eggs together? 😉
I still need to try out savoury oat bran! That’s next on my list!
Totally agree about butter, whole eggs being whole foods! They are the least processed things out there basically! Compared to smart balance butter or any of those others.
And I love my broccoli slaw too:)
Agree on your philosophy 100%!
Yep…wine sounds like a goodie as well!
oh do it!! i think you’ll be hooked. it’s delicious!
LOVE your definition of clean eats…. I agree totally. Closest to nature= cleanest for me! I really don’t get the whole “egg-whites” thing…. the yolk is SUCH a nutritional powerhouse, why omit it? Misty LOVES eggs….. and I LOVE wine and dark chocolate 😉
eggs eggs eggs! haha i always go through egg phases – i’ll get SUPER obsessed one week and then the next week the thought of eggs make me gag hahaha i’m “off” eggs right now but this post makes me want one right now!
same here. I’m on an egg and sausage kick now. I blame summer. It makes me want sausage!
I can’t think of a better Clean Eats ambassador! You’re my go-to nutrition gu-ru!
yes, Stuftmama makes broccoli slaw the new OOIJ!
oh you are too kind. CLean eating is easy when you just focus on real good food, right?
my kind of clean eating is one that is void of protein powders, artificial sweeteners or stabilizers. it’s whole, natural foods minimal processed if at all!
fellow red wine lover, i must share with you a depression era hooch. not sure if it’s sold in your part of the country but i’ll check it out! think wine & chocolate but NOT a chocolate vino. are you curious yet? 🙂
oh is it a bar? i am very curious!
Such a great post!! Way too often people hear the words “clean eating” and automatically assume diet. Which is so so far from true. I eat pretty clean in my opinion and I am definitely not on any sort of diet. 🙂 Cheers!
i agree. Diet should be avoided. no need to take out good food, just enjoy REAL food, right?
Clean Eating to me is 99% of what you said, except for the chocolate! I’ll switch that up with a cupcake or a cookie. Butter is used in these, so I’m still kind of technically “clean eating”. HA! Nice try Katie…Happy Friday girl and have a fabulous weekend!
totally legit! i actually prefer gelato!
OIAJ? :/ I must be a little slow on that one.
Also, I’m SO glad you shared these things. I not-so-recently realized I can eat broccoli again (I had some major GI issues about 5 years ago and stayed away from a LOT of things for a while). So I should pick up a bag of slaw!
LOL! Oats In A Jar. Ya, i actually never really did it. And i am just now able to eat slaw again too. But still have to be cooked so stomach can handle it. Let me know whatcha think of these recipes.
It’s a slow process, healing that tummy. I just started eating raw veggies again regularly about this time last year.
HEHE I like your definition of clean eating especially if it includes good wine :-D. Clean eating to me is what you said about wholesome food and fresh food that makes you feel good when you consume it not heavy and yucky LOL! Love my veggies & my meats and if I can buy locally then even better b/c I’m supporting my local economy right??!! 🙂
totally! a great support! p.s. got your email. when email you soon about healthy bites. YEA!
I think we both know my definition pretty much mirrors yours. I couldn’t agree more 🙂
oh and i forgot cream in our coffee, yes?
Thank you for the broccoli slaw variations! They sell it at my grocer’s all the time, but am never sure what to do with it. I like the tuna idea. and the asian flare idea. coolio. i know stuft mama is addicted to it. LOL.
Clean eats all the way – to me its doing with out the processed food and shopping the parameter of the grocery store.
yes, keep away from the inner isles, right? good strategy!
I’m bringing a broccoli slaw recipe to a party tomorrow – although I’ve been making it for years, so I guess I was ahead of the trend. 🙂
Yes to whole, real, clean foods. Amen.
haha, i know. I always bought slaw cause it was cheap and organic. Win win!
I love your point about focusing on ingredients and nutrients, not calories. That’s one of the things I love about my training plan – they didn’t give my any numbers (other than protein), so I don’t feel like I’m a slave to some crazy target.
As far as my definition, I come back to Jillian Micheals’ quote: If it didn’t come of the earth or have a mother, don’t eat it.
and its so freeing. You feel like you are actually nourishing yourself, yes!
Clean eating to me means eating food as close to it’s natural state as possible.
i knew you’d agree with this. Love that saying that your doctor told you, about how our body doesn’t recognize chemicals and go haywire! You should write a post on that.
I need to get CARBS out of my DIET GRRRRRR
Also right now I am doing a NO SWEETS challenge with my guy friend (the one that you read about on my BLOG) and I feel like I am going to LOSE this challenge….
i don’t think you need to take our carbs and sugar, just focus on the source! like brown rice, sweet potatoes, whole grains. and sugar, keep it real. Maple syrup is a blessing! hehe.
I LOVE sweet potatoes!!! YUM!!!!! I LOVE Maple Syrup!!! YUM 🙂
Also I think I wanna get some of your healthy bites…just not sure how to order or what I want 🙂
Oh my broccoli slaw….. 🙂 I didn’t realize everyone else was using it so much too. He he. 🙂 Love that wine and chocolate made your clean eats list. I love cleaning up my diet- it feels so good mentally and physically. 🙂 can you please come over with your Healthy Bites? 🙂
if i start running now, i might get to CA by the new year. Think the healthy bites would last? hehe. love ya. Hope you are getting some rest friend. Email me prayer requests!
I completely agree – whole, real, nutritious foods and it must definitely include wine and chocolate. But the label “clean eating” has always thrown me off a bit because it makes me think of stripped down, bland food.
i know, we need a new label! like REALfood eating!
My idea of clean eating sounds a lot like yours. If it doesn’t come in a box or a bottle (obviously, not including the wine…hehe) then it is probably clean.
I eat the yolk too, but only if it’s runny. I can’t stand a hard yolk. BLECH.
i don’t like hard boiled yolk either, unless i mix it with creamy mustard and fill the egg. Devlish eggs!
I LOVE that you consider butter and whole eggs clean eats! I feel the same way. I think it’s all about how much a food is processed or how unnaturally it’s grown/messed with (um, hello GMO?) that dirties it up! Clean eating is delicious on so many levels 🙂
yes yes yes!! oh i wish we processed food would just go away.
I am a big fan of whole eggs! They are definitely clean eating in my book. 🙂
amen to that rach!
I love all of your broccoli slaw ideas! Can’t wait to try them out! 🙂
let me know if you do! happy friday!
Clean eating has never made me feel so, well, clean! 😉
Your pizza looks really tasty!
LOL! exactly!
Making me blush with the birthday shoutout! I love you!! Come back to NC this weekend. 😉
oh i want too! soo soo bad. Got a room ready?
I’m not a fan of the phrase clean eating, but I do like eating that way–whole, unprocessed foods. Agreed that includes wine and chocolate.
ditto! maybe we should change it to Wholesome eats!
Broccoli slaw is the new OIAJ…lol. Frankly I’m not too impressed with either. But I am with you on whole eggs and chocolate being clean eating staples!
they are cheap staples, ya know? easy to dress up! haha.
Anything you post is important silly 🙂
The pizza (minus the sausage I’m veg) sounds good! I might have to get the recipe 🙂
Happy almost Friday!
you should use tempeh instead. I’ve used that!! happy almost friday love!
Clean eating for me is about how it makes me feel (normally whole foods) – sometimes it is eggs, sometimes it is egg whites! It about avoiding “fake” for me!
totally! love it! keepin’ it real. plus most real food is GF! phew.
I love your approach and completely agree with you! There needs to be a little leeway in life to account for the wholesome things like wine (antioxidants of course) and dark chocolate, too. And I wish we could have a glass of wine together as we speak 😉
me too. I kinda wish we all lived in the same city. sigh.
This is the kind of POV I am working on… enough with the calorie counting and just get to the real food, the stuff our body thrives on! Thanks for the reminder Lindsay 🙂
yes m’am! keep it real and the calories don’t need to matter. We get too fixated on the that, sad but true. eh? p.s. welcome home!
I love all your clean eats! and it’s funny you mention broccoli slaw, it is all over lately. I saw it in some mac ‘n cheese somewhere. looks super delish! do you consider any cheeses as ‘clean?’ I’m having trouble avoiding those up in Wisconsin this week….
oh cheese is clean to me, if your tummy is good with it! i love aged cheese! the stinkier the better. haha
LOVE me some whole eggs 🙂
fried of course! right?
Your definition of clean eats is EXACTLY the same as mine. Whole, real, nourishing and real…and it must, must, must involve wine and dark chocolate too. All in good balance, right? PS broccoli slaw, I must get in on the crazy! yum!
ha, how’d i know? love your meals. and wine choice of course. The slaw is cheap, and a good staple. i bet you’d love it with wraps or in cottage cheese!
Love it!! Keep EATING CLEAN because it feels SO DARN GOOD.
yes it does. real food for fuel!
love this! well if you asked me a few years ago this my answer would of been different. back then I thought it was all about taking stuff out, now I realized real food is all I need. no need to worry about calories, etc. just eat when I want and make sure it is real food!
totally agree! i wish we never would have gone through any of those “diets.” such a waste of time and energy. But then again, live and learn, yes?
I love that you consider wine and chocolate clean eats! Although, one question… why should I take ibuprofen after eating a whole bar? Is there some weird side effect to chocolate I’ve never heard of? Or was that just in regards to the whole bottle of wine? haha
LOL! the ibuprofen is for the bottle of wine for sure. Not the chocolate of course. 😉
Wine is absolutely a must in clean eating 😉
do we even need to justify that? i think not.
Not in the least! I like your definition of clean eats though Lindsay! Very important for people to understand! On a side note-no DVDs? If not I’ll send another set on Monday!
