Food for thought Thursday

by LCCotter on June 7, 2012

Guess what?! I’m still working on that TO DO list. It’s round two in the kitchen today. Wish me luck!

I also taught my first class at the gym since being back.

bike

Almost 8 months of not teaching and not being on a spin bike. I am out of “spin” shape for sure! Luckily I started teaching a cycle/yoga class so although the spin part kicked my booty, the yoga part just felt natural! Oh thank heavens for my weekly yoga, right Katie?! Winking smile And Katie, I wore your shirt yet again. It goes so well with my bright pink yoga/spin capris! hehe.

By the way, the shirt says “strong is beautiful.” And on the back is SHE ROCKS FITNESS LOGO. It’s SWEEEEET!

Since I am trying to tackle my to do list this week, I don’t have much to report in terms of recipes, workouts, etc. But I do have some FOOD FOR THOUGHT. And those are always needed on a Thursday, right?

This one is about change. I read this devotional the day I got back from the Bahamas. It hit home with me…. and hard! We are always in the midst of outer change, but this devotional made me think of inner change. You know, the inner change you desire but have a hard time doing. Well, that’s me at least. So read on and let me know whatcha think. Smile with tongue out

“Have you ever wanted to “freeze” a moment and make it last a lifetime? I have. I have also lived through certain moments that I wish I could change or even delete and pretend they never happened. But change is a natural part of life. We can embrace it, or we can fight it.

My husband often says that the only people who really like change are wet babies. However, I have discovered that some people thrive and live for change to the point that they are “change junkies” and have little stability in life. Others dig in their heels and refuse to change a thing and ultimately become prisoners of old habits – good and bad. When it comes to change, we have a decision to make – just like the eagle.

The eagle has the longest life-span among birds. It can live up to 70 years, but to reach this age, the eagle has to make a hard decision. In its’ 40s, the eagle’s long and flexible talons can no longer grab prey, which serves as food. Its long and sharp beak becomes bent and its old and heavy wings, covered with feathers that have grown thick over the years, become stuck to its chest, making it difficult to fly.

The eagle is then left with only two options: die or go through a painful process of change, which lasts 150 days. The difficult process requires the eagle to fly to a mountain top and sit on its nest. There the eagle knocks its beak against a rock until the beak falls off. The eagle will then wait for a new beak to grow back and use the new beak to pluck out its talons. When the new talons grow back, the eagle starts plucking out all of the old feathers. After five months, the eagle takes a famous flight of rebirth and lives 30 more years.

Change is sometimes needed to survive. God may be asking you to step out in faith and make a change in your life. He has already been where He is asking you to go and prepared every step of the way for you. You don’t have to be afraid of the unknown. It is unknown only to you. God is well aware of where you are and of every step He is asking you to take. He may be asking you to get rid of old memories, eliminate destructive habits and forsake lifeless traditions. He is waiting for you to take one step. Faith in God does not come all at once. Faith is a step-by-step process that begins with one small step and increases as we go.

Don’t wait until you believe it all.
Don’t wait until you can see it all.
Don’t wait until you understand it all.

Trust God and step out in faith. He will meet you there.”

How stinking cool is that eagle story? I love it! And it’s spot on!!

Food for thought Thursday is on! Leave a comment with your thoughts if you desire. Smile

wow, WOW! change is difficult, sometimes painful. the more pain the more it is worth it? possibly. probably.

I think I USED to be one of those who thrived on change. I was constantly on the move, you could not keep me from the hustle bustle of NYC for more than a month at a time (yep, I traveled MANY red eye flights between 2007-11…).

I still welcome change more than I resist it, but I am happier as a more settled down being. comfortable. with a few talon pulls here and there! ;)

We love change, but it’s so outer. I embrace it but still need to embrace the inner change. I know you know that feeling. ;-)

Wow, that eagle story is crazy…but such a good example. Change necessary for survival. I totally agree. I equate change to being out of the comfort zone and in CHALLENGING myself. I love routine, truly, but know change is something I NEED too. Rock on in your spin/yoga class btw!! SO VERY COOL! I want a Lindsay butt kicking!

Great devotional and so true. It’s hard to think of “starting over” in anything….we always think we are “too old” but as we’ve seen from so many inspirational stories in others’ lives, that’s simply not true. I hope I always remember that being brave in these moments is what makes life worth living!

I actually had to google that eagle story to find out if it was real or not.

Thank you so much for continuing to share your devotionals! You know how I feel about religion (and honestly it’s mostly organized religion that has left a bad taste in my mouth, which is really why I’m not religious anymore). I love the positive messages that you find and I’m so glad you share them!

Wowser!! I love this Lindsay :-) . I am working on this now! Obviously I’m working on the physical change but it’s the mental that can be the hardest ;-) . I keep telling people the process that I am going through(i.e., losing a large amt of weight) is more THERAPEUTIC than anything! It’s the mental part that is helping me the most. I’m happier and when I smile… I’m really SMILING LOL! I will have to share this with others because it’s that awesome. Thanks :-D

I never knew that eagles had to endure such a thing. what a trip. and sad. but change is constant. if you resist it, I believe is to hold yourself back from finding your strength, your true self, and finding the best in you. So, I say, ‘roll with the punches’ and see where it takes you. ;)

Not to get all Ornithology professor on you, but that story about the Eagle is totally 100% false. They can’t regrow their beaks, much less “decide to”. And the average lifespan is 30 years.

But I get the point of the story, and it is a great message. Too bad whoever wrote it didn’t use real facts.

I am reminded of the phrase, ‘replace fear with faith’ when I read this. I have to think to myself, If I am really this afraid, how much faith do I really have- in theory, they really can’t exist at the same time.
It also reminds me of a MLK quote, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
Good stuff. Thank you for posting this! I am so very glad that I found your blog!!!! ooxx

A.men. I love the story of the eagle, but what I love most is this:

Don’t wait until you believe it all.
Don’t wait until you can see it all.
Don’t wait until you understand it all.

I feel like during this training of mine, that is what I’m learning. I didn’t believe, at least 100% yet, that I could get to a half marathon. But I didn’t wait. I don’t understand running 100%, but I do it the best I can. You can’t wait for everything…otherwise, opportunity passes right by you.
